Tolkien lived in Birmingham from 1895 to the time he went to Oxford University in 1911. It was an eventful time - he left South Africa with his mother and brother Hilary in April 1995. In February 1896 his father died in South Africa. At the age of 12 his mother died and he was looked after by Father Morgan from the Birmingham Oratory. He went to school at King Edwards in New Street in the city centre. Many things during his life in Birmingham were influential on his later writings. There will be a chapter in our next book on Birmingham looking at Tolkien's links with the city. Our next book of Birmingham will include a substantial chapter on Tolkien's time in Birmingham. Currently we produce the two main books of photography of the modern city. Email us and we will add you to the list of people who have asked to receive details of the new book: office@tolkien-birmingham.co.uk.
